VEO has been trusted with the contract to rebuild the Tihisenniemi substation in Kajaani, northeastern Finland. The substation is owned by Fingrid, the company responsible for the national grid in Finland.

The project aims to replace the existing obsolete substation with a new station and, in the process, secure the electricity supply in the Kainuu region. Launched at the beginning of 2018, the project will be completed during 2019. The scope of VEO’s turnkey delivery covers all stages from civil work and delivery of high-voltage switchgear with protection and control systems to commissioning of the substation.

GIS-based project

The execution of the new Tihisenniemi power distribution station of 110 kV is based on gas insulated switchgear (GIS) technology, which requires much less space than traditional air-insulated switchgear. The GIS solution also enables a smooth completion of the project without any interruptions in the power distribution: the new indoor switchgear will be fully operational before the existing outdoor switchgear is demolished. Previously, VEO has carried out several GIS projects to different customers in the Nordics, but Tihisenniemi is the first GIS-based project to be delivered to Fingrid.

With the modernisation project in Tihisenniemi VEO shows its strong project management skills that extend to different technological requirements – irrespective of whether air insulated solutions or gas insulated switchgear is needed, as in the case of Tihisenniemi. ”VEO has proved to be a reliable Finnish partner with strong project management competence.
